What is a Coat of Arms? Is there a difference between it a the crest? Ancestors Names and Crests answeres these questions plus more.
Coats of Arms ( Charges on Arms)
Armorial bearings are commonly called a Coat Of Arms but, heraldically speaking, this term refers only to the insiginia borne on the shield. The very simple coats are probably the most ancient.
Charges on Arms
Prior to the 11th century, lords and nobles legalized documents and transactions with their seal. These seals bore symboles that were recognized as to belonging to that person. These symbols usually took the form of some animals, deitys or topographic markings which was recognized by all persons in the area. It was natural that these devices would be added to the face of the lord's battle shield, and become a part of his coat of arms.

The Helmet
In modern heraldry is a simple design and generally avoids ostentatious artistry. It is customary to unify the shield and helmet by having the breastplate of the armour slighly overlap the top of the shield.
The Mantle
Mantle or scrollwork about the shield was adopted from the cloak worn by the knight. It is purely decorative and its absence is immaterial.
The swirls and twists, originally indicative of the torn mantle and slashes incurred in battle, have been changed through the centuries to a vine-like effect.

The Crest
The Crest is found on the top of the helmet. The history of the crest is somewhat obscure and more than likely represents a symbol of the military leader. Early coats had no crests and those that do are probably of a later time. Most people unknowingly refer to the coat of arms as the crest.
